Vadim Yurievich Kukushkin was born in 1956 in Leningrad (now St.Petersburg), the Russian Federation. He studied chemistry at the Lensovet Technological Institute (Technical University), where he obtained his Diploma in 1979 and doctoral degree in 1982. After two years at industrially oriented Mekhanobr Institute (Leningrad), he joined the faculty at the St.Petersburg State University (1984) as Research Associate. He was obtained his DSc degree (habilitation) in 1992, promoted to Senior Research Fellow in 1994, to Full Professor in 1997. In 2007, Professor Kukushkin was elected Head of Department of Physical Organic Chemistry. For excellence in teaching he was awarded the Soros Professorship in (2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004), and St.Petersburg State University Prize as "Teacher of the Year" (2004) and Grand Prix for "The Best Series of Research Works" (2007). In 2006, he was elected as a Corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
He is the Executive Secretary (1999-2007) and Chairman (since 2007) of the General and Inorganic Chemistry Section of the Russian Chemical Society; Member of the Scientific Board on Inorganic Chemistry (section "Coordination Chemistry") of the Russian Academy of Sciences, since 1999; Member of the Scientific Board on awarding PhD degrees, St.Petersburg State Technological Institute, 2000; Member of the Scientific Board on awarding DSc degrees, St.Petersburg State University, since 2001; Member of the Scientific Board on awarding DSc degrees, St.Petersburg State Technological Institute, since 2001; Member of the Scientific Board of Department of Chemistry, St.Petersburg State University (2002, and since 2006); Member of the Editorial Boards of Inorganica Chimica Acta and Trends in Inorganic Chemistry, since 2003; Russian Journal of General Chemistry, since 2004; Russian Journal of Applied Chemistry, since 2006; Open Inorganic Chemistry Journal, since 2007; Letters in Organic Chemistry, since 2007; Macroheterocycles, since 2008.
Professor Kukushkin was Visiting Professor at the Institute for Molecular Science (1992) and the JSPS Visiting Professor at the Osaka City University (1996), Japan, Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of Toledo (1994), USA, and Guest Professor at the University of Vienna (1999), Austria. In 2007, he was appointed a Visiting Chair Professor of the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology. He was awarded a grant for International Authors by the Royal Society of Chemistry, UK, 2001. He delivered lecture courses "Aspects of Modern Synthetic Coordination Chemistry" for undergraduate students, Instituto Superior Tecnico, Lisbon, Portugal (February 1999) and "Komplexchemie" for graduate students, University of Vienna, Austria (MarchApril 1999). Professor Kukushkin gave invited lectures at the Academies: Accademia Peloritana dei Pericolanti, Italy (November 1993), the National Academy of Sciences, Portugal, (May 1999) and ca. 40 invited lectures at various Universities in Europe, USA, and Asia.
His research interests include platinum group metal chemistry, ligand reactivity, organic synthesis involving metal complexes, and catalysis. He is author of more than 230 original papers, patents, reviews and also five books including "Synthetic Coordination Chemistry: Principles and Practice" (written as a joint RussianAmerican project) and three chapters in the second edition of "Comprehensive Coordination Chemistry".
